F.A.Q.s

Do you accept non-Curtin Students/Staff?
Absolutely! Rhythmos accepts anyone who passes our audition process, regardless of their affiliation to Curtin University. The only thing that is different for non-Curtin Guild members is the membership fee.

Are there any membership fees?
Everyone who joins must pay a fee, however fees do vary. Fees are paid every six months.
Currently Rhythmos is undergoing a Curtin Guild affiliation re-shuffle, so fee amounts are subject to change over the next few months. Fees are currently around $100 per semester (and we are doing our best to keep them from rising!).

How often do you rehearse and perform?
We rehearse every week on Wednesday during semester from 6:00-8:30pm. As a portion of the choir are uni students, we usually take a break during university semester breaks (unless a performance is coming up!). However, just because we are not at rehearsals doesn’t mean we don’t rehearse independently in our own time!

Other rehearsals can be added around concert and performance times. The choir typically performs four to five times per semester, and it is expected that members will make themselves available for these whenever possible.

Where do you rehearse?
We rehearse at Curtin University’s campus in Bentley. Usually this will be in the Tim Winton Auditorium, but may vary (with prior notice) during exam and study periods.

What are the expectations from me as a member?
As a Rhythmos member you are expected to be fully committed to the choir on a semesterly basis (at minimum). This means attendance at all rehearsals and performances, unless prior clearance is given (we acknowledge and are understanding of the reality that life doesn’t always go to plan; sometimes there are unavoidable circumstances preventing attendance), a commitment to working diligently to learn the music (including memorisation and choreography between rehearsals), and assistance with choir and performance organisation and publicity whenever required.

What do I need to bring to rehearsal?
You won’t need to bring too much. However, we do recommend you bring a smartphone or tablet device with you to read music on, and a water bottle to stay hydrated (there is also a drinking-water dispenser nearby). Choir members are always welcome to request printed sheet music if they would prefer (a pencil is recommended to make erasable notes!).

Is there a deadline for auditions?
No, you can audition anytime! See the process below for more information. In person auditions will be held periodically, the next one will be Wed 26th of Feb.

Can I audition more than once?
Yes - absolutely! As well as music ability, there are factors such as availability in sections that can affect how your audition is received. There are some semesters where unfortunately we have to turn away some great singers as a certain section is at capacity. However, don’t let this discourage you! Please feel free to come and try again and the circumstances may have changed!

What if I want to sing in a choir, but I really don’t want to audition?

We understand that auditions may not be for everyone. If you feel like the audition process is too much or you are unsuccessful in your audition attempt and don’t want to try again, don’t stop there: Curtin Singers may be the place for you! As a non-audition choir, Curtin Singers is a fantastic part of the Rhythmos Community that gets people together to enjoy music in a stress-free and fun social environment.

Audition Process

(there is no deadline!)

  1. Submit an application form/email

Fill in your details and then submit the application form at the bottom of this page.

Or alternatively, you may send us an email outlining your answers to the form’s questions.

  2. Receive audition information

We will send you an email outlining the audition process and provide you with materials to prepare for your audition.

We will also invite you to come to your first rehearsal! If you are auditioning in-person, you can audition before the rehearsal or during the rehearsal break.

  3. Attend your audition

After your audition, you can attend rehearsals for 3-4 weeks, and we will have a chat to find out how rehearsals have been for you during this early period.

  4. Attend rehearsals

After 3-4 weeks, our Musical Director will check in with you to discuss how you're settling into the choir. We will also ask you to sing through your part in the extract from “Scarborough Fair” (click the red link in the next section). At this stage, you are welcome to continue with us as an official member, depending on how you are settling in.

please note: we will not ask you to pay a membership fee until after the 3-4 week period.

What do I have to do in my audition?

Both in-person and online/video auditions:

  • Sing a scale up and down in C major and then G major (after you have warmed up). This is to help us ascertain your vocal range. It’s alright if you’re unable to reach all the notes! You may sing each note as “la” or in solfa/solfege.

    1. C major: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edScGrfl50M

    2. G major: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgEr5sgspis

  • Sing a song of your choice with no backing music (approximately 30 seconds)

  • Sing this extract from "Scarborough Fair" - either the melody, or the part you would most like to audition for.

Video/Online Auditions

Please record a video of all of the steps above. You may edit your video, within reason (we need to hear the real you!)

Attach your video to an email, and send it to us at [rhythmoschoir@gmail.com]. If the video file is too large to be attached to an email, we suggest uploading it to YouTube or Google Drive, and then sending us a link to it (and ensure permission to access it is enabled).

We will reply within a month inviting you to come to your first rehearsal. If you don’t hear from us, your email may have been misplaced (an unavoidable possibility). Please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us to find out what’s happening!

We look forward to hearing your audition!
